Guide
What pages a trade website needs
Most trade websites have either too few pages or far too many. Too few and there is nothing for Google to rank. Too many and the same thin content gets repeated twenty times with only the town name changed, which does more harm than good.
The homepage
Says who you are, what you do, where you do it and how to contact you, all visible without scrolling. Below that, a short run through your main services with links, some proof, and your number again.
It is not the place to explain everything. Its job is to point people at the right page quickly.
One page per service
This is where most of your search traffic will land. Each main service gets a page that talks about that service only, in the words customers use.
Four or five strong service pages beat one long services page every time, because each one can rank on its own.
Proof pages
These do the convincing once someone is interested.
- Previous work or gallery, grouped by job type
- Reviews, with a link to your Google profile
- About, with real photos of you and the team
- Areas covered, so people know you come to them
Contact and the small print
A contact page with a short form, your number, your email, your hours and your address if you have a premises. Nothing clever, just easy.
Privacy policy and cookie information are not optional, and a proper 404 page stops broken links dumping people out of the site.
Pages worth adding later
Location pages for the towns you genuinely work in, written with real local detail rather than a find and replace. A guides section if you have things worth explaining. Case studies once you have jobs you can write up.
Add these when you have something real to put on them, not to hit a page count.
Common questions
How many pages should a small trade website have?
Most do well with eight to fifteen. The number matters far less than whether each page has a clear job.
Do I need a blog?
Only if you will keep it going or have someone doing it for you. An abandoned blog with two posts from three years ago looks worse than none.
